Dr. Buchanan’s career has included direct clinical care, medical education, and administrative innovation. As a primary-care internist, he has practiced in a conventional private group practice, a staff-model HMO, a rural hospital, and in both a primary care clinic and an occupational medicine/employee health office at an academic medical center. He has precepted medical students and medical residents in multiple settings, and for the last decade has taught first and second year medical students in Principle of Clinical Medicine. Dr. Buchanan’s administrative positions have included Vice President for Medical Affairs at a physician practice management company, Regional Medical Director for a nation-wide provider of utilization review and case management services, and Medical Director for a correctional system with 20,000 inmates.
