My laboratory is interested in the differentiation of osteoblasts, which are the cells responsible for bone formation. We are studying bone remodeling, with a focus on the post-transcriptional mechanisms regulating the growth factors and matrix molecules important for maintaining bone mass.


Our most recent work is centered on how microRNAs (small non-coding RNAs) regulate the gene expression networks modulating osteoblast and osteoclast differentiation. We are also studying how 3' UTR single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) may modulate gene expression.

Lab Rotation Projects
1. Analysis of the mechanisms regulating the expression of miR-29 family in bone cells.
2. Validate mRNA targets for specific miRNA families in osteoblasts, and determine their role in osteoblast differentiation. Characterize the mechanisms regulating the expression of miRNA families in osteoblasts.
4. Characterize the skeletal phenotype of transgenic mice that do not express miR-29 family members.
5. Other potential research projects suggested by interested students will be considered!
