Anil Adisesh is Chief for the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at UConn Health, Farmington, Connecticut. His clinical interests primarily concern occupational and environmental diseases. He has co-edited the International Labour Organisation “Diagnostic and exposure criteria for occupational diseases” and chaired the WHO Global working group on Occupational Health for ICD-11. Qualified as a specialist physician in Occupational Medicine in the UK since 1997, he has worked in industry, higher education and hospital occupational health services. As Deputy Chief Medical Officer at the UK national Health and Safety Laboratory he led the Hand and Arm Vibration referral clinic; provided training and scientific / medical support. He moved to Canada in 2013 as the inaugural JD Irving Chair in Occupational Medicine before in 2019 transferring to the University of Toronto and St. Michael’s hospital as academic and clinical Division Director. He then spent three years as Chief Medical Officer at Canadian Health Solutions, a commercial provider. He was accredited by the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, and holds US Board Certification in Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
In his MSc. thesis study he made the first measurements of exhaled breath Nitric Oxide in occupational asthma and extended these studies in doctoral research on organic dust exposures and the effects of endotoxin. In 2021 he was honored with the Smiley lectureship and gold medal of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. He spoke on the topic of Occupational Health Informatics, a field he is developing. Anil is the co-chair of the International Partnership on Automatic Job Coding. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Table on Occupational Disease for the Ontario WSIB and a member of the ACOEM Council on Science.

His clinical interests primarily concern occupational and environmental diseases. As Deputy Chief Medical Officer at the UK national Health and Safety Laboratory he led the Hand and Arm Vibration referral clinic and subsequently the St. Michael's hospital, Toronto HAVS clinic, the largest in Canada. He has significant experience in occupational skin disorders, occupational asthma, allergy and toxicology.

Anil’s current research interests are in the use of computer science with AI algorithms to aid job title coding for occupational classifications, occupational disease recognition, data linkage, and patient self-reporting. He has active projects collecting occupational information from patients in primary care clinics, studying COPD and its relationship to occupational exposures, and the development of tools to aid occupational history recording.
